Gothic Barcelona History Tour

The Route of the Layetanos

There are still many mysteries in the Gothic neighborhood that we do not know, for example; where the executor of the King lived, as the houses of courtesans were identified so that they could be recognized by the soldiers of the Army.

In Roman times when Barcelona was called «Barcino» the settlement of the city was located on a hill of the Gothic quarter, its summit is identified with a plate «Monte Taber» its height was 16.9 m. above sea level, we will see that there is still a mill-shaped stone on the ground indicating the point where the Romans could control the entrance of the ships in Barcelona.

We will see the columns of the ancient Temple of Emperor Augustus of 9 m. of height and which corresponded to the upper right corner of the Temple built at the end of the 1st century that presided over the City Forum.

The two defensive towers of the old Roman wall of the 1st century did not stop evolving since the third century after the first barbarian threat the walls were transformed into a huge defensive enclosure next to the reconstruction of the aqueduct in the current square Nova «Porta praetoria» in Roman times.

The colony Julia Augusta Paterna Faventia «Barcino». The entrance to the praetoria portal.

In the Plaza del Rey there is the Royal Palace, first residence of the Counts of Barcelona and the Kings of Aragon. Its origin dates back to the 11th century and was built on the Roman walls, transforming over time into what it is today. Dramas occurred on the steps and Carlos Príncipe de Viana died in the interior in 1461.

The Tinell Hall built by King Peter the Ceremonious in 1362. The Chapel of Saint Agatha, the Palace of the Loctinent, the viewpoint of King Martí and so on.

There are areas of the Gothic quarter that are not and others that are, the interesting thing is to know where the real ones are, what happened exactly on the steps of the Plaza del Rey and so on.

There is a curious story about the cathedral and its construction we will explain on the route…

Plaza San Jaime, although being transformed, was always a main axis of the path of crossing the two main roads of the Roman city of Barcino. On the route we will show maps of the location of the Plaza San Jaime in Roman times.
